When you hear a dog has "papers," they are generally referring to AKC (American Kennel Club) documents that state the mother and father of the dog were the same breed as the dog you are getting. That's all. It doesn't mean they are breed standard or that they don't have genetic problems or that they are healthy or ANYTHING. So if you're paying hundreds of dollars (or more) for a papered dog - why? The parents could have been dwarfed or deaf or blind or have severe hip displayia.
If you're going to spend a large amount on a dog, make sure you're getting a healthy dog, well bred dog, with a good temperment, not paying for "papers"
And designer dogs, are what we used to call mutts. Nothing says you're going to get the best of both breeds.
Educate yourself before you get a pet.
Shelter dogs are some of the best ones you can get, and their are breed rescues too. Why buy a dog when millions are being put to sleep every year? A pet is for it's life, not when it's convienient for you

I agree with your statements, but you've chosen the wrong forum to speak your mind. Your "details" section is more of a soft-line diatribe than an explanation of your question and the last statement makes you sound self-righteous and superior to the peons below you. Get off your high horse and take your preachy attitude somewhere else.

That is why knowledgable people buy from a good breeder. If you buy a puppy at a flea market/parking lot/pet shop you are definately taking a chance. No caring breeder sells there puppies like that. Good breeders will be screening you and will do appropriate health testing.

'Designer' and shelter dogs have plenty of health problems as well. Their pedigree is usually not full of dogs that have been tested for health problems. No decent breeder is selling their breeding stock to be used to breed yet more doodles or poo crosses. I think in general, a WELL BRED purebred is going to be healthier than a crossbreed. A puppy at the flea market? Who knows?

I don't understand why people will spend so much time researching what kind of car or refrigerator to buy and then buy a living breathing puppy on a street corner. I also don't understand why people think a living breathing animal should live for years and years with never a single health problem. Breeders are not building refrigerators gauranteed to run for ten years.

The people who buy pups on a street corner and can't bother to research deserve what they get. Live and learn, do it differently next time.

This is so very true.
People have no idea what AKC papers even mean.
They just assume that "pepered" means quality.
It only means that if the breeder told the truth you know who the parents of your dog was. If the breeder lied you have no clue.
As far a health goes I have a AKC papered dog who has hip dispalysia and a congenital eye defect (he is blind now) and a heart murmer. He is papered and came from some championship blood lines.

My rottweiler was free, he has papers... but we paid like $300 for another male rottweiler, and about $250 for a female... the male was very hyper and aggressive and he had to get put to sleep, the female has a white spot and had a birth defect where her eyelid was rolled up because she was so saggy and we had to get it fixed. My rottweiler who was free (the owner owed us a lot of money and we loved his dog, his dog stayed with us overnight sometimes and I had such a strong bond with him, they were moving and we said leave the dog and you don't owe us any money so he did) he's a great dog, very good looking, nice stance, very smart, obedient... and he was free! The ones we paid money for turned out to be more of a waste than anything. So I totally get what you're saying. I'm not all about buying dogs because they're pedigree, I would definitely foster a dog or adopt one from a kennel to save it. I know people who get dogs because of their name or their breed and end up not taking care of it and giving it away because they don't want to feed it... but I take good care of my pets... and I wish my pet would be for my entire life, and not just for his since I know I'll be around long after he goes.

It is true you need to get dogs before they are put to sleep, those dogs deserve to have a family, and not be put to sleep, ont he other hand dogs with "papers" will not be put to sleep because they will always find a home.
