Yes, they are a different plant, contain a different chemical, and perform differently under heat. However, if you don't like or can't find cilantro, parsley can sometimes be an appropriate substitute. I've found corriander is also a good substitute (in small amounts), because it is the seed of the cilantro plant.

Parsley is a decoration used in restaurants (can be eaten as a breath cleaner) it's a milder flavor than cilantro. Cilantro is as said earlier used mainly in Mexican food. And forget Maximus' answer, cilantro is much, much better than parsley!

They are closely related plants, cilantro looks a lot like flat-leaf parsley - but yes there is a definite difference in the taste.

Oh yes! Definetely!
The thing is that cilantro [ actual name CORIANDER ] is also known as MEXICAN PARSLEY. So, a lot of people confuse them as the same.
Parsley is more of a garnish really. It comes in two different shapes. There's one that is like a little flat leaf which is chopped up and put on top of a lot of recipes, the other one is like a curly little flowery thing which is just for garnish. The taste is much more milder.
Cilantro, on the other hand, has a stronger taste and you can use the whole flower. This one you can distinguish them because they look like little little fern leaves. It's a stronger taste and is used a lot in foreign cuisine.
For example, in my country, the Dominican Republic, we use Parsley mostly as a garnish and sometimes chopped up and sprinkled on top of some soups. Coriander/cilantro is mostly used to add flavor! On beans and sauces for certain chicken recipes.

Yes, parsley is a commonly used herbin american cuisine, it appears as a garnish, as well as being chopped and add to recipes for its mild flavor and great color, Cilantro is common in mexican recipes, it has a very disticnt flavor, they do look similiar however, cilantro is flat leaved and parsley is curley, you can smell the difference in their fresh form.
