because its human nature to eat, so therefore it is more normal to be fat than anorexic. Therefore the insulter is saying ha! your stupid you're going against nature. However I doubt that is what they are thinking.
The anorexic person made themselves thin on purpose, they had an issue with their weight (usually, although its got a lot to do with control).
The fat person doesn't want to be fat, whereas the anorexic was trying to look thin.
Also the media is full of practically anorexic people, so therefore its fair game in terms of slagging off.

I agree with Allie. I used to be underweight and would get comments all the time about how skinny I was. Just like she said - double standard. My guess would be that people assume that those who are thin choose to be thin and those who are overweight are trying to lose weight. Actually, for those trying to gain weight, it may be even harder than those trying to lose as sometimes you physically can't eat anymore. (I remember I would eat 4-5000 calories a day and drink a pint of whole cream before bed, and would lose weight!) I doubt many people know that, which may be why most people wouldn't think twice about calling someone skinny.

This is caused by societal stigmatisation.
As long as we have the idea that being thin (no matter how unhealthily) is better than being fat,we will continue to lose young women to anorexic eating disorders.

No one should insult an anorexic as they are suffering mental illness, even though they don't usually realise or admit it.
But i know what you are trying to say - i am slim and people seem to think it is ok to say things like 'Skinny *****'.
But i imagine if i said in response 'Fat cow...!' they'd have something to say...!

Insulting any person is not nice. It should not matter what race, religion, body type, metabolic disorder, disability, gender, sexual preference the insulter or insultee is.
Why does the insulter feel the need to put down anyone, anyway?

Insulting anyone because of how they look is pretty low in my opinion.
making excuses about it is worse then just saying "well its my opinion you are a fat b@stard or a skinny minger "or whatever.
I have not met anyone who didnt have something insult worthy, good grief if people started on me they could be insulting me all day!

Because Americans have been trained into the false idea that thin is beautiful. When it comes to obese people it looks sloppy, piggish. Certain overweight individuals are insecure, uncomfortable with themselves and tend to stand out as easy targets for cruel ill mannered people.

calling an anorexic person 'skinny-***' will probably make them happy, calling a fat person 'fatty' will usually hurt their feelings as they may feel they haven't caused themselves to lose weight lke is is not there fault.
anorexics purposely get skinny, fat people -well it usually sort of creeps up on them, they don't TRY to get fat it just happens
