The book of Genesis is in its source text part of what is called the Masoretic text, in Hebrew. There are divisions asside from the paragraph divisions by the letter Pe and the letter samek, Pe meaning "separate", and samek meaning "partition". So the book of Genesis was composed in parts and branched off, especially in the time of Abraham, where it can be said that the Hebrew portion begins, I believe around chapter 11 or 12.

Part of the reason why this book survives is due to the strong writing tradition in Egypt which was imparted to the Hebrews.

Scripture says Holy men of old spoke as God the Holy spirit moved them.

The best way to know who wrote a text is to analyze its styalistics (the character of the narative written, the way it is written). And I believe that someone grown up in the Egyptian culture wrote the book of Genesis. Also the story of Joseph takes up the greatest part of the book and that takes place in Egypt. Note also that Egyptians were very familiar with floods, from the Nile, and the story of Noah is the story of the great flood; I am very supprised that this does not occur to anyone except for a few scholars (litterally a few).

Answer: someone grown up in the Egyptian culture; (and this is believed from content and styalistics, and possibly language, but that last part would be a controvercial opinion).

Most Jews and Christians recognize Moses as the author of Genesis, which he probably wrote sometime after the Exodus from Egypt (about 1445BC).

It is only evident that he wrote at least parts of Deuteronomy because they are written in first person.
