Done - ness:
If you push it with your thumb and it's mushy and blood comes out, it's rare.
If you push it with your thumb and it's soft with no blood, it's medium-rare.
Anything beyond this is pretty much medium to well done.
Remember that it will continue to cook after you take it off the grill. Give it at least ten minutes after you take it off the grill before you serve it, otherwise the juices will run out and it will be dry. Never cut into while it's on the grill.

Well, it sounds like you have more issues than this little steak to simmer.
How you cook your steak depends on how you like it and how thinck. Medium is generally a good bet with most people. Medium gives you a warm pink (not cool red) center, leaving the steak flavorful and tender, but warm and a little crispy on the crust.
First heat your grill to the hottest setting, if you have gas, adjust the controls, if you have coals, lower the grill to near the coals.
Put on the steaks and leave for 1 minute, then turn the steaks and lower the heat or raise the grill away from the coals. Leave the steak on for 5 to 7 minutes then turn and leave for 5 minutes then cut open one steak in the thickest meaty (not fatty) part and see if the inside is pink and not still red inside. Leave the steak on to the desired doneness. When done, take 'em off and eat 'em as soon as you can get them in your mouth without burning yourself. They're best hot off the grill!
One tip for great tasting steak is marinade and seasoning. An easy marniade is Oil and vinegar salad dressing, cover them with the dressing and refridgerate for at least an hour, overnight is not too long. For added zest add some lime juice either bottled or fresh squeezed. Then before you grill, sprinkle at least Salt and Pepper on them and add other desired dry seasonings like Garlic Salt, Seasoned Salt and/or Chili powder.
As far as your BF, Do the best on the steaks and if he's happy, keep him, if he's not, try your new recipe on a new BF!

You can't bake a steak, it will be ruined. Steaks require hot temperature and fast cooking. Cook on BBQ or grill it or flash fry in frying pan. The steak should take 4-6 minutes each side depending on how well done you like it. It should still be pink in the middle. Take of the heat and cover with foil and rest for 10 minutes. For goodness sake do not follow the advice to bake it for 4 hours. You will have a dry grey mess.

1/2 " is not too thick, I would try 3 minutes per side. Use high flame.
