I've heard of those trendy "stiletto workouts" and I want to know, does walking in high heels REALLY add muscle to your calves?

I ask because, I have recently started working out, I'm usually on a recumbent bike for cardio, and I do strength training exercises with free weights, etc. I don't do much that specifically works on the calves, in fact I have been much more focused on my arms and abs. This new era of working out coincides with the beginning of an internship, where I need to wear suits (and naturally, the heels that accompany them). They stick us interns in a parking structure 2 blocks away, so I have to walk back and forth twice, including lunch, and add in some stairs depending on what floor I parked on.

Now, I have always walked a lot, and I used to work retail 8 hours a day in heels. But I just noticed my calves are getting VERY firm, and bigger that I'd like.

Do the high heels really do that much?? If so, I want to switch to flats! Any trainers out there?

It may strengthen them some. But you need to consider the fact that wearing high heels all the time will also shorten your gastrocnemius. Which puts you foot in a plantarflexion position. Eventually making it difficult to wear flat shoes.

Yes, when I wear heels and have to walk a lot my calves get very tight and they are sore for like a day. I have noticed considerable changes in them too. If you have to walk a lot I suggest you alternate between heels and flats if you can.

I believe they do, I started wearing heels when I was 15 and I'm 19 now and my calves are really defined. A lot of people comment on them, I don't really exercise either, lol.

most excersise of any muscle when taken to its limit will result in some pain, Wearing heels for the first time, people find pain in the calf muscles, It would seem logic that if the muscle is worked hard , that yes it would develop no differently to any other muscles.
