Check AKC.org or CKC.com They have listings. Or check your local paper. If the dog you want is nearby, go to the kennel, check the facility, cleanliness, space for each dog, how many breeds do they sell, etc. If it doesn't look or feel right just leave.
If you want a "toy" breed, be prepared to pay a lot!
If they are hundreds less than a reputable breeder, you will pay much more in vet bills later.

Go to your local kennel club or obedience school.
Go to a dog show. Make sure you approach people after they have been in the ring or are at their grooming area.
Every breed has a rescue. Search for american + breed + club. They will probably have links to rescue.
NOTHING wrong with getting a purebred puppy instead of a cross at a shelter! Just do your reasearch and buy from a good breeder if you go that route.
I know many good breeders that have more than 1 litter a year. All puppies are not always sold before they are born. I prefer to see what I have and decide what I want to keep before promising anyone a puppy.

A responsible breeder of any breed will only have about 1 litter a year, if that. So be prepared to be put on a waiting list. To find a good breeder in your area, simply start visiting some dog events such as shows. Talk to the enthusiasts of the breed you are interested in and learn as much about the breed as you can. A responsible breeder isn't going to be listing puppies for sale in local classifieds, thats for sure. They should have homes all lined up before the breeding even takes place. And, of course, they will reserve at least one puppy for themselves. Since the only reason for breeding their dogs in the first place is to produce an even better example of the breed to continue thier line.
If that all seems too much, then you need to go to your local humane society or find a breed rescue. Start at petfinder.com.

You should not buy a pet from a dog breeder.; You should adopt from a no-kill animal shelter and save an animal's live. Having a breeder make more pets means that less shelter animals will get a home. Plus, they are way less expensive and animals are usually up to date on shots. to find a certain breed in a shelter in your area, go to petfinder.com and do a search for that breed in your area.

Look on the internet for a breed rescue for whatever breed you want - generally if you email them, they can tell you where to find some good breeders.
whatever you do, don't go to a pet store and don't pay a ridiculous amount for a "designer" breed - they're mutts!
