What are we actually saying when we use the word 'whatever' ?

So many people use this word lately, where did it spring from and what do you mean when you use it ?
Sounds cheeky to me most of the time ?

We are saying that because we don't have a better "come-back." It's means, "I don't care," even if the person really does care.

Nowadays, people say it when they can't think of anything better to say or when they have been "beaten" in a discussion or an argument. Saying "whatever" makes it seem as if the person doesn't value the topic as much and dissociates him/her from the topic, so the person can maintain their self-esteem. Basically, it's a cheap way to get out of admitting that one is wrong.

I am a high strung white chick w/ one hand on my hip. Eyeballs rolling around in the head. Tripping up eveyone because my foot is pointed out in front of me. I do get dizzy when I roll my head and eyeballs at the same time.

Its a way of dismissing the person. Its just an easy comeback or a way to end the fight or argument. Its like saying "I'm not listening to you!"
