Depends on your travel plans. If you plan to stay in La Paz only and not venture out to anywhere, you DO NOT need antimalarial prophylaxis. There is no risk of malaria in the city of La Paz. However, if you plan to visit and explore Bolivia, then antimalarial prophylaxis is recommended especially in areas at < 8200 feet elevation. Malarone is the preferred antimalarial prophylaxis. Since malaria is transmitted by mosquitos, general precautions against them is important. Remember your DEET.

According to the CDC, there's no risk in the city of La Paz. However, since you are travelling to a country that has malaria, it would be highly recommeded that you take antimalarial pills.

Check out CDC.gov website and look under the traveler's health section. You can indicate the area you will be visiting and they can tell you everything you need to be concerned about. Have a fun trip.
