No,that was the year of hope for human liberty.
the darkest day came with the invention of the semi-conductor
which in time will provide the means ,if allowed,to remove all vestiges of liberty.

Since there isn't that much of the British Empire left, I'm not so sure how wonderful being part of it is.
As to the darkest year in US history, 1932 and the depths of the Depression; 1861-1865 and the Civil War and 1968 (Vietnam and internal unrest) would all rank much higher.

I would say 1776 was one of the brightest years of American history... without the dedication and sacrifice of our forefathers during that year, there would really be no American History.
With that being said, I would say 1861, 1928, 1941, 1973 and 2001 (not necessarily in that order).

Why would we be "speaking the Queen's English now"? Is Australia? Canada? India?
Anyway, the French didn't help the Americans very much.

Actually leaving the kings rule behind was important to owning property and the rights of men. And later the rights of slaves and women. Democracy needs freehold land and a democratic government. Now women can hold land like men do. They have freedom to live singly and raise children. This Is what I see in America.
