Get a standard poodle. Great dogs. Huskies are good too, althought they want to run away. Chows aren't bad although they are prone to some expensive disabilities latter in life. Bad dogs: Beagles (constant barking).

Go to a dog rescue there are lots of dogs wanting and needing a good home. I would get a mongrel, they are far more healthier than pedigree dogs (I've had both) and rescue dogs seem to know they have been given a second chance and are always more loving and grateful

Get a Patterdale Terrier, they are a bit like Jack Russells only smaller. I have one called Guinness. She is 2 & really cute. She can be quite energetic when out, she is very loyal, & protective of the house, amazingly friendly, in my opinion, they are one of the best breeds around. Also because they are not recognised by the Kennel Club as a breed they are quite cheap. She also does not cost much to own as she doesn't eat a lot, nor need grooming. Mine is also at home all day alone, while I am at work with no problems. Eccentric, fun, cute & loyal little dogs.

Get a dog that fits you and the house/back yard it will live in. A dog will always be your best friend if you are a friend to them.

Basset is a very friendly dog, not too lively - just as you want it to be. Like every dog he needs to be taken to walk, you have to play with it. But is very calm, cool, you will surely fall in love with that dog - especially because of his eyes.
Hope you will find the dog that you want! Good luck!

Personally, I think you should get a Daschund (sp?). They are otherwise known as "hot dogs". They are very calm, loyal and cute, IMO. Spayed/neutered Daschunds are the best way to go if you do not wish to own more than one dog. Don't take the cue from me alone- research this dog just to make double sure that you can handle it. You won't regret it!

Whippets are great medium sized dogs. They have short coats with not a lot of care needed, they require exercise, but usually aren't too hyper, are loyal, sweet and quiet dogs. Also, check out welsh corgis, they are great dogs too.

go to the local shelter and rehome a dog. they have many dogs to choose from that need a good and loving home and rescue dogs are so appreciative and loving, u wont regret it. im sure when u see the dogs, u will find just the right one for u. they are normally alot cheaper to buy and because they are not puppies, u wont have to pay out for shots and stuff. they are ideal pets. ive had 3 rescue dogs and they have been absolutely wonderful, very loving and loyal. u will make the dog so happy it will love u forever. best wishes.

I wanted to add comments about Whippets. They ARE very sweet, affectionate, gentle, and cuddly. They are also a very sturdy dog, not fragile at all. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my Whippets!
But they are also not highly trainable, are smart, naughty, can NEVER be trusted off lead, and will 'take care of' any small critters in your yard. Puppies are extremely wild for the first couple years. Whippets tend to be much happier in a home with other Whippets, or at least another dog. They will expect to be under your covers at night and on your couch during the day.
But I cannot imagine not having them...
