well, that depends on how much value you place on something, and how much you want to spend.
i have a fujifilm finepix e550 and its held up great for the last 2 years or so. the pics come out great, and it has an awesome zoom, and an awesome digital zoom. never heard anyone say anything about my pics other than how good they come out. and its not as expensive as some cameras out there.
for more current models, i'd check out consumer reports, and just go to circuit city or staples or whatever and try a few out. see what you like.
