The best way to get vitamins is from food; but in your son's case dairy products are out! Green leafy veggies are also a good source; kale, broccoli and spinach for example, but this may not appeal to him ( depending on his age ) and he will still need to take a calcium supplement in addition .There are different Calcium supplements- there are coral calcium, calcium citrate and calcium carbonate. As always, the studies are really hard to understand and the findings aren't always reliable! You should discuss it with your pharmacist- if he/she isn't "up" on the latest studies, then find one who is! Here is website that has some info and I am sure there are many more- just beware of the agenda behind certain websites! Herbal supplement companies HATE pharmaceutical companies and want everyone to buy their products even though herbal remedies don't have to undergo the amount of clinical trials that medications do to prove if they actually work. I am an RN and my husband is a pharmacist and we strive to educate ppl about herbal supplements and remedies, because there are so many misconceptions!
