you need to get the CD first. You can get a Windows XP CD for like $40 these days, especially on http://www.ebay.com

Just install it and it will erase all data and install Windows XP for you. So you should back up everything using a data CD or a file hosting server online.

If you need help with it, just contact me.

Before you do upgrade to Windows XP, computers equipped with Windows ME may or may not be able to run Windows XP well. Yes they will run it... slowly but not well. If you are looking to upgrade your operating system on an older system then go with Windows 2000 which is more or less what Windows XP is though Windows XP has a few more features than Windows 2000 but they are still pretty much the same operating system, the full version will cost you about $175 (not including shipping or applicable tax), http://www.bizrate.com/operatingsystems/pid5147882/compareprices__keyword--windows%202000__sort--6.html

I would definitely agree that you need a different windows version. "ME" is by far the worst of them all.

One thing - what are the specs of your computer? - age, processor, RAM, video card, hard drive, etc...This will have great influence over whether or not you can upgrade. Dell actually has on their website support pages that will let you know if you can upgrade - all you have to do is put in your model number. You can go to http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/product_support/en/desktops?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=mn to get started.

I could help more if have more info, but this is a good starting point.

Buy the upgrade version of XP Home or XP Pro.

Before you do this go to microsoft.com and run the upgrade advisor. It will let you know any software or hardware issues you might have.

Its pretty easy.
