Well, he left a boat to walk on water. He didn't walk on water to walk on water, rather to demonstrate faith and teach one of his disciples about faith. Peter walked on water too. That is, until he looked away from Jesus and looked at the water.

He could have had a boat if he wanted to or ask for it from Peter and Peter would have give it to Him.But the issue isn't that he could or not walked on water. It's in if you believe he could without being actually there.

Jesus planned on walking on water all along. If you read that whole passage you can see that Jesus forced his disciples to get in the boat while He went up on a mountain to pray.

Most, if not all of the miracles Jesus performed where done not only for the immediate and obvious reasons. They were done to teach us greater spiritual truths.

For instance when Jesus came near the boat and Peter said "if it's really you tell me to come to you on the water" and Peter walked on the water until he took his eyes off of Jesus and looked around at the storm surrounding him we get a picture of how when we face the "storms" that will come into every believers life we just need to keep our focus and trust on Jesus.

But even if we falter, like Peter did when he looked away and started to sink, we only need to call out to Jesus who will reach out and save us.

Matthew 14:22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat was already a considerable distance[a] from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

25During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear.

27But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

28"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."

29"Come," he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

30But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"

31Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

32And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.

33Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."
