Many answering your question have said that they feel sorry for us muslim women. So, first, I want to address those people and their hateful remarks ("oh, i feel so SORRY for those women!")
Stop worrying - you've been lied to or misinformed. Our rights granted to us in Islam are far superior to your rights as women.
We are respected and protected. You are exploited and used.
While your religion tells you to cover your head out of submission to your husband, ours tells us to do it only out of submission to God/Allah and as a means of protection and modesty.
While your religion tells you plainly that you must "stay silent in the church", our religion tell us no such thing. Many great women have narrated many traditions, relaying very important aspects of the religion on to generations to come.
While your men are stripping you with their eyes, even in your house of worship, we are granted privacy and kept away from the annoying glances of men that we already aren't the least bit interested in. (if I already have a husband, why do I need attention from yours? and I'm not left to the wolves to get a husband in the first place)
While your men tell you to undress to get "respect" (LOL), our men preserve our honor and treat us like a precious pearl.
While your men pressure you for sex, ours marry us.
While your men finally marry you after trying you out first... and often have dirty affairs in which they lie and deceive...... our men may take a second wife and treat both wives with dignity, divide their time equally, give them each their own house, and create stable environments for everyone involved... Or, our men realize that it's such a big responsibility to have a second wife, that they choose not to approach other women at all.
The only time our men mess up is when they TRY TO IMITATE YOU.
I'm sorry, but you need to realize how ignorant, smug, and insulting these "oh poor them" comments are.
--------- Now, back to the original question:
People often confuse the PEOPLE with the RELIGION (way of life).
The religion is pure and beautiful. There are good and bad Muslims, obedient and disobedient, to varying degrees.
So, always be tolerant of the RELIGION. But tolerance with any MUSLIM is taken on an individual basis.

Islam is much misunderstood. Unfortunately, we only see the wackos in the media. Imagine if the only view the outside world got of the Christian West was Pat Robertson, who called for the assasination of Hugo Chavez.
Islam is a peaceful religion (if the enemy asks for peace, a good muslim must give it, as long as doing so does not hurt Islam) and was incredibly progressive for it's time and very woman friendly (Mohomed gave women the right to divorce and inheritence more than 1000 years before women got it in the west.) And contrary to common belief, it is not sexually repressive (Mohomed actually said that it is a man's DUTY to make sure that his wife is "satisfied." Contrast that with the west where the church was teaching sex was an insult to the wife.)
I found Karen Armstrong's "Islam: a Short History" to be very informative. (She is a retired English nun, but has won awards from muslim groups for her work.) The beginning was amazing, and the end talking about the interface of the East and West completely changed my understanding of current events. The middle dragged on a bit, but it was still a great book and should be a must read for anyone who does not undestand this religion. Her book "A history of God" is great too. And her book "Holy War" will completely change your understanding of the Palestinian problem.

Hello!
People, according to their mind capacity need, or do not need religion.
Thus, when a lower religion is promoted to higher level people, the religion does not "pass", thus, as history shows, slaughtering of the ones opposing to be converted is being done!
~100 millions Native Americans were slaughtered in the name of Jesus! For the same, millions lost their lives in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, etc.
Similarly, Islam did!
Overall, Islam was prepared by Mohammad in order to organize the Arabs and give them meaning, unity, social structure, rules, laws and regulations!
As long as we know that and we want to follow any religion, fine, if you stop thinking and just believe, we are lost souls!
Further, as Christianity, Islam can not stand without Judaism! Both religions are based on Talmud and thus "have" the same forefathers, "god" properties and specifications, etc.

I am a Christian and have not attended any Islamic gathering. I can only view Islam from the outside. But as I can see, it is a religion of those who do not believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that for muslims, Christ is just like any other prophets. But I respect the discipline and faith of those who are muslims. However, like any other religion, this can be exploited to the point of doing illogical things (suicide for one). This can happen not only of the islamic faith. But in terms of having to compete with other sects or religion, I believe that in the end, all of man has the same and one God.

Like other regilion Islam is also very good regilion... Regilion can not be bad.. Those are the believers, who make a bad impression for their regilion in front of other regilion... Take a example as Islam. In the holy Quaran, there is no word like "JIHAAAD"... But some people for to prove themselves better then others, they made this word, and killing so many innocent people... even they are killing their own brothers and sister... they are doing this all things on the name of ISLAM... but this is wrong.... Because ISLAM means PAK, means holy, and holy sthings stuff or anything never teach you to kill innocents, no matter what.....

Islam is the first religion ever existed, When God created Adam and Eve and prevented them to eat from a tree like any other tree in the heaven, He thus created the religion called Islam, A way of life submitting to the will of God.

This question has been in my mind ever since 9/11 occurred - mostly because of the experiences my own Muslim friends have had since that day - they have been discriminated against and had to face obstacles purely because of the religion they are alligned with - it is atrocious that there are so many ignorant people in our country that see the acts of al-qaeda and feel that they represent all Muslims - The Oklahoma Bombings were done by a lunatic Christian - Terror Against Terror the radical Jewish terrorist group that would bomb Muslim Schools and Cities - so back to the question - there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING wrong with Islam - it is yet another religion that needs to be understood before it is judged - we live in a country that prides itself on equality for all yet never seems to live up to that notion

They all r butchers. There is nothing in Islam to be proud but there r so many things for shame.

I think that Islam is much just like Christianity. A religion that while containing some language that can be interpreted to justify violence and oppression is meant to teach a way to live righteously and peacefully. Those who kill in the name of Allah are no different than those who took part in the Crusades, which no one ever mentions in church.

All religions are good including Islam, Its we who made them distorted. though I am a Hindu, I don't hate Muslims as a whole but only the extremists and terrorists. All religions are made by humans as God never created the religions. Its our forefathers who made religions to keep the wild humans in the social community. We distorted their sayings to meet our nefarious designs.
