IHS is from the latin - In Hoc Signo (vinces) in this sign conquer.

the greek for Jesus is IESUS which is sigma.

IXTHUS or ICHTHUS is greek for fish and the S is a sigma

mhairi is right, it's from the latin. But you will always find sigmas on the end of words shown much like the letter s in English; in Greek, there isa different symbol for a sgma if it's on the end of a word.

I think mhairi has it. (But I remember when learning Greek there are different forms for s depending on whether it occurs at the end of a word or not.)
