The chances are, you can't do it yourself. However, tons of companies out there can print Tradeshow stile area rugs. Check out a company called the Godfrey Group (www.godfreygroup.com) as they are the larges Tradeshow product provider out there. I know they can do what you are asking. The product is called a digital carpet.
Also check out a company called Camel Back displays as they offer it. A link is provided below
http://www.camelbackdisplays.com/floor-advantage-tradeshow-carpet.htm
Again, do a google for Digital Capret or Custom Printed Carpets and you'll find what you are looking for.

What you can do is take a rug frame and paint a picture on the rug frame. Use color. Buy the string of the colors you used. Then, use the rug frame as template for weaving in the picture. Then, cut a square into the rug. Make sure the square fits the size of the picture. Make sure you add a backround, or else you fill just have rug frame in the back.

if you work in solid shapes and colors to produce the images then try this. find someone who can vector a photograph for you. go to a digital imaging shop, print business or someone who know either Adobe Illustrator, macromedia Freehand or Corel Draw. have the person take the photo and draw on top of it. if they are skilled enought they should be able to do this with little problem.. it would depend on how much detail you wanted and how many colors you can use for the final work. then once you have this artwork you can cut your pieces to match the shapes and simply put them together in the carpet like you would your other stuff. in the end if you have the colors right, your pieces will look just like the vectores image of the photo. i am a graphic artist who works with vectors and could definently see this working, it would be a lot of work on your part, (installing) but it would pretty sharp.
other suggestion, hire an artist to reproduce the image with stains or paints that would not crust up, applied with an airbrush or something like that would work.

I have never heard of one actually created in carpet. My local camera store has a woven type product that is more of a wall hanging item. It appears to be woven into the fabric. How they do it I don't know. Here is a link:
