The AVP (Association of Volleyball Professionals) was founded in 1983 to cater to the sport of beach volleyball, its players, and fans. In 2001, after a revamp, the organization took over the beach volleyball tour in Manhattan Beach, California. With this move, the AVP became the focal point around which professional beach volleyball in the United States revolves. The international counterpart to the AVP is the FIVB.
The AVP represents professional beach volleyball via tours that are broadcast over television networks like NBC and OLN. The Nissan Championship tour began on September 3, 2005.
The AVP is led by Leonard Armato, the commissioner of the AVP.
The top players on the 2005 AVP tour were Jake Gibb / Stein Metzger on the men's side and Kerri Walsh / Misty May-Treanor on the women's side.
The current sponsor of the 2006 AVP tour is Crocs.
