Best airline : United followed by Southwest.
I have never had a bad experience on United. They smile,
greet you, and have free channels to listen to and movies for
free. Southwest is also very good.
Worst ; Northwest by far. I have been late, stranded many many times. Even left on a runway for eleven hours in a snowstorm.
No water, no food. They went bankrupt. Gee I wonder why.

When you talk about American owned airlines, the lesser of the evils would be Northwest for a major full service and Southwest for a budget airlines.

However there isn't an American owned airlines left that has good service or food.

The bottom of the pack for U.S. would be a tie between United & American. I refuse to use either one ever again.

Would wide, as a rule Asian owned are the best. Cathay Pacific leading the pack. Malaysia Airlines is good, however the customer service people & ticket agents need more training and I've never been on one that left on time (flown with them 6 or 7 times)

European owned ones are in the middle, as a rule better than American but far worse than Asian.

I think it depends for what you looking for, I think no matter what airline you go you always going to find some really good stuff ,and not so good, well if you just going between the USA, you better off in a regional jet, i know there small and a little uncomfortable, but they get you where you want to go, a little bit faster and cheaper like( united express, us airway express, america west, american eagle, ect ) but if you going out of the country you should go main line with the biggger planes( united ,us airways, delta, continental, american, foering airlines) they would have meals, a little bigger seats and space.
If we talk about delays all airlines have delays no matter how good they are, and most of the time is not there fault, wheather is something they can't change even if they want to, and trust me maintence, I think you rather be safe and late then sorry and somewhere else. and one last thing costumer service ( gate agents, fligth attends pilots or any type of costumer service) they trying to do there best, i think you would have to be in there shoes to understand what there going througth, imagine sometimes there trying to help more then 50 people at the time,it could be either rebooking there flight, serving drinks, getting blankets, up datings reservations, checking last minute luggage, sitting problems, the smallest things could be the worst.
So I guest for me any airline is good as long as they doing there best to get you where you want to go... It depents how you look at it....

My worst experience is worth United Airlines. 3 friends and I flew from Indianapolis to San Diego with 2 layovers on the way there and back. With every leg of the trip, the planes were delayed for some odd reason. We literally had to run through each of the connecting airports just to catch our next plane. This was really exhausting in the larger airports.

The check in people were also really mean. On the way back, we had to catch a plane at 7am. We got there around 5:15 and the lines were outrageous. Our plane was boarding and we still hadn't checked in our luggage yet. They actually had to hold the plane because half of the passengers were still in line. All the people working there were really rude and were yelling at all of the people in line.

The flight attendants were terrible as well. One time, my friend was asleep but she told me she wanted a pop when they came around. I asked the flight attendant for an extra pop so I could give it to my friend and she said no, that my friend could get one when she woke up. Then when my friend did wake up, she asked the flight attendant and she said she couldn't have one because they already put the stuff away.

The planes were all really old and cramped. The plane between San Francisco and San Diego only had like 24 seats on it and still used propellers. I swear I saw duct tape on the outside of the plane on the wings and propeller parts. When we got on, they had problems with weight distribution and made us all change seats. It was so shaky and loud, I thought I was going to die. I will never fly United again, even if I have to pay more for another airline. The best experiences I've had are with Comair and Delta.

Best Airline: Lufthansa. Good service and food, and the crew keeps the passangers informed! If there's a delay, they do tell us the reason for it, and try to compensate.

Worst Airline: Air India. Second hand planes. Accidents, fuel leaks, delay for sure in every flight, horrible condition of toilets, and lots more.

Singapore Airlines and Quantas are the best, TWA is the worst, but best here in the states is Delta. Continental, no opinion, same for Northwest, and the rest.

Hawaii Air is good too...ranks up there with Delta.

I agree with nana21. It all depends on where you're going. i.e. China - Cathay Pacific, America - American Airlines, United, Delta, etc. They're all pretty good... at least the major ones.
