Spelling, whether or not you are a second language learner, IS hard in English. It's rather strange because some people spell well naturally and English is not a language that can ALWAYS be sounded out (though most words CAN be sounded out).
For other people, they have to study spelling. This has NOTHING to do with how smart you are. I had some friends in school who were smarter than I am, and they couldn't spell at all. For them, they had to memorize how words were spelled and use a dictionary to look up anything they were confused about. It was painful for them, but they had no choice.
There are a few other things you can do to help. One of them is to look into the phonics rules. They teach how each letter should sound, and the advanced rules tell you how to tell if there is a silent "e" at the end of a word and how to spell words that don't seem to sound out correctly.
For the most part, if you aren't a "naturally good" speller, memorizing words and learning how to sound them out correctly will probably be your best helps. Good luck. Just remember, it has nothing to do with how smart you are!

For a simple, step-by-step program that can help your child learn to read visit this site: http://readingprogram.toptips.org
Learning to read at a young age is important for the development of the child. It helps them develop a better understand of their surroundings, allows them to gather information from printed materials, and provides them with a wonderful source of entertainment when they read stories and rhymes. Children develop at different rates, and some children will develop reading skills quicker than other children; however, what's important is that as the parent, you are keenly aware of your child's maturity and reading level to provide them with appropriate books and activities to help them improve.
As parents, you are the most important teacher for your children.

What's your first language?
I take French as a second language so I know spelling can be hard. Try writing a word down if you learn through sight. If you learn verbally spell it out-loud. That's what I do.

I find that reading books helps me with my spelling and it also helps me learn new words. I also read the dictionary or Thesaurus at random. BUT, when I was a little squirt... My favorite way of learning was with flash cards! You will need someone to help you with it though. My husband... he finds that sounding out a word helps also! :o)

Read everything you can get your hands on and as often as possible. Start out with books geared toward younger readers which have more basic words. Read out loud to kids. The best spellers were the most prolific readers as children. Its harder to learn when you're older, but not impossible.
