6 oz is the standard glass of wine. Hopefully your glasses will be large enough to only pour it into the bottom 1/3 of the glass but most wine glasses are not. If you have "normal" size wine glasses, and not the specialty kinds of wine glasses from Riedel or Spiegelau, then fill the glass between 1/2 to 2/3 full. It still gives you some room to swirl so that you get the proper aromas from the bouquet.

First define standard :)

It is usually considered that you get 6 glasses from a bottle of wine. Its easy in metric, as a 750ml bottle contains 6 x 125ml glasses -- which is the usual pour where I am. 125ml equals 4.26 US fluid ounces.

But where I am, wine pours by the glass are legally defined as being 125ml, 175ml (5.92 oz) or multiples of. And what is becoming so common its almost a new standard is the 250ml (8.45 fl oz)- pour, which is a third of a bottle.

But in places where there is no regulation on pour sizes, a bar/restuarant can use any size they want. And disguise the actual amount by using thick glass (so feels heavy), smaller glasses (so they look fuller) etc.

It is important to know how much the pour is, as that is the only way you can measure how much you are drinking.

I've ordered wine by the glass in many US states and it seems to me that the usual pour there is between 5 and 6 ounces.

At home the important thing is to use a glass bigger than the pour, pouring about the wine to about a third full in order to appreciate its bouquet. Make smaller pours of white wine since it quickly warms in the glass,.

In restaurants, they usually serve wine in a 6oz. glass. A dessert wine is 4oz. or 6oz. A good red wine should be served in a 20oz. glass, but pour no more than 1/3rd full. This brings out the bouquet. So, whatever size wine glass you use, that's the amount. Hope this helps.

A typical restaurant pours between 5.5 & 6. The pour at home really depends more on the glassware you are using. When using a large wine glass pour under a half, this enables the glass to do its job and aerate the wine.
