Harmful Acids?! Every ingredient used in mouthwash is safe, or the FDA wouldn't allow it to be sold. The high alcohol content can be a biting experience, especially if you have mouth sores. If the alcohol irritates your mouth tissues, buy the kind that is low alcohol or alcohol free. No over-the-counter product sold today is strong enough to harm your teeth.

The acid in the fluoride helps the fluoride atom replace the calcium atom in the enamel crystal. Fluoride binds a lot tighter than calcium & so makes the enamel harder.

The "antiplaque" rinses do not work. The big problem with mouthwashes is the alcohol - the tingling sensation is the alcohol pulling the water out of your tissues, pickling your gums.
The fluoride rinse is the better value. It will also make your teeth harder to stain.

Yes, the whitening agents are harmful to tooth enamel. However, the formulations of peroxides in use now pale in comparison of their destructive potential to the whiteners used in earlier centuries. It was rare for the well to do to have teeth past middle age because of the destructive practices of tooth whitening popular in Europe and America.
The development of less harmful agents is the reason for the renewed proliferation of over the counter tooth whitening agents.
