A couple of years ago I found a handicap conure in a bird shop and fell in love with him, so I paid $200 for him and have taken care of him ever since. We took him to the vet last month and he is severly underweight, he can't use his feet to eat because they are paralyzed, so we changed his diet. However he is still severly uinderweight, he eats a lot - has fresh food and water everyday, but still is not getting enough to eat.

If he's suffering how terrible would it be to have him euthanized?

You might take him to a vet and have him checked for a crop blockage or parasites. Try feeding him things high in protein and fat--sunflower seed and peanuts and flax are good for a start. Look into what other things could be good.

If all else fails, have him euthanized. I know it's tough and i've done the same thing myself, but though I miss my Baby im,mensely, I'm not sorry knowing I did everything I could.

Bless you for taking him in and giving him a few wonderful years!!
I think that's what you need to keep in mind as you face this decision. It's heartbreaking, but sometimes things are just beyond our control, and it really isn't fair to keep him alive if he's suffering. They don't understand about chronic illness, that some days will be good and others bad like people do, they just know they feel like crap, have felt like crap forever, and will continue feeling like crap. The kindest thing is to put him to sleep. Try not to feel guilty, he loves you and wants you to be happy, even in his death. And you did so much for him, tried so hard. Bless you and I'll say a little prayer for all of you.

Have you tried spoon feeding him? You can use baby cereal, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc...Also you can use a medicine syringe, the kind for babies, without any needle.
