The vet says my 5 year old cat is urinating outside her litter box because of stress. We got her a new litter box (so now we have two) because the vet said she dosen't like to share with the kitten. How can I figure out what else my be stressing her and take care of that problem? How can I figure out if there is a new cat or something in the neighborhood bothering her?

The new kitten may be causing stress to you cat. Or......Have you moved recently, have a baby, recently became married or divorced, change in work schedule, etc? The other possibility is there is only two boxes, and the kitten is using both. In reality, you should have two boxes per cat for a total of four boxes.
Cats react to things differently like we do as humans. My one cat was put on "Kitty Prozac" for a while due to an addition of a dog ,my partner, and a roommate. She became violent. The other two cats were fine. After three months, we weaned her off of the anti-depressant, and she is now fine.
If matters get worse, talk to your vet about an anti-depressant for a short period of time. It really does work, kitty and you will be happier in the end.
Good Luck and keep us posted!

It's probably nothing more that the new kitty. I have seven cats and sometimes this just happens. If she is really stressed, look for a third eyelid, it comes up from the bottom and is white. Its one of the first signs of stress. I am going to guess that she will get over the new arrival in a month or so, and hopefully things will get back to normal. My cat gentry, started to pee out of the box, I saw the eyelid and new something was bothering him, I figured out it was because I had quit letting him go out so much. As soon as I installed a cat door...instant success. He was fine again. Good luck.

It doesn't sound like the Vet was mumbling to you, so aparently you don't believe him. It's the kitten that has him stressed. Remember that he was young once. He knows what is in store for him. The kitten will want to play all the time. He is too old to play with a little kitten. That is a chore for younger cats.

He will be upset and stressed for a while. When he gets fed up with the kitten bothering him, He will raise his front paws, claws retracted, and then smack the crap out of the kitten. Then he will feel better and the stress partially relieved. A few more times of smacking the crap out of the kitten will disapate all his stress.

Have you asked your cat what's bothering her? Do you have ghosts in your home?
