I understand that as it was Adam, that the commandment was given, and Eve probably learn it from Adam. Thus, we can see that Eve actually added a word inside, which means she may not actually know the commandment well. Read Gen 3:3, God never say 'can not touch it'.
On top of these, we know that it was Adam that named all the animal. If there is something wrong with the snake (talking snake), Adam will know it. He would have know the character of snake, and will know what is the snake up to.
Thus, that makes Eve an easy target. I think so, I may be wrong. It is only my personally opinion.

I still think that the serpent tempted eve because thats what I read. "The serpent tempted eve" I am not even sure what your question is you seem to be confused. If Eve had not eaten of the fruit then things would be much different that is true. But they would be much better. Eves mistake was eating of the fruit of the midst of the garden. She was told not too. And then she gave it to Adam to eat. AFter that came a sacrifice of an animal for they're sins and they knew right from wrong. Temptation was abundant after that and then evil spread across the world. God told Adam do not eat from only two trees in the garden. The tree of immortality and the tree of good and evil. Satan tempted us to eat the lesser of the two of course. The tree of good and evil for his own ends. It would not have done any good for him to have us immortal and perfect. It would only have pleased him for us to share in his mistake of disobeying God and then knowing the consequences of our actions after. Satan, a fallen angel only wanted for another race of beings to not be worthy and make a mistake as he had. And other angels like him who also made the same mistake. Also he wanted for this mistake to reverberate around the earth till the end of time. So this was not a good thing you see. For Eve to eat of the fruit. It was a bad thing.

Wow so many questions on here have statements that are just not true. Please read Genesis chapters 1-4. The Garden account doesn't say that they were going to eat from the Tree of Life. Adam had an choice not to eat from the tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil but to eat from the other trees including the Tree of Life.
The story is about how we have free will to choose to do as God asks us to do or not. It is our choice. The serpents job is to destroy everything that God calls precious. He cares nothing for people only to destroy them and keep them eternally separated from God.
The Serpent also called Satan is an angel who rebelled against God and was thrown out of Heaven "like a lightening bolt". He wants to be God. Much like some of us who don't want to listen to God. He choose his own path instead of remaining in his normal abode.
He tempted Eve to cause doubt in her mind as to who God is. He used the lines that He uses on people everyday.
1) Don't you deserve to be happy? - Being a bible teacher I hear this one all the time
2) God is withholding something good for you. - My second favorite God's word declares that He has good plans for you and not evil ones (Jeremiah 29:11)
3)You should be God.- God says in Exodus 20:1-2 that He is God alone.
The serpent was and still is very crafty. That is why we need someone who can battle him. God does a much better job than I could ever do in fighting off Satan.

I've seen so many replies, let me just add my view which may be a little different than those submitted earlier. Quotes are from New American Bible
SERPENT CORRECTING A MISTAKE?
I do not think the serpent was correcting a mistake. Rather it is a guise to tempt Eve. She must have been walking past the tree many times but the Serpent's comments suddenly made the fruit look 'pleasing to the eyes' (Gen 3:6)
Because of the fall, Adam and Eve can no longer eat from the Tree of Life and subsequently die. It is true that Adam lived a long time by today's standard, but imagine the long life he would live if he had access to the Tree of Life forever. In Genesis Chapter 4 we read that sins of man continue to pervade the generations to come. There's murder, and Lamech who thought he could get away with murdering people too. It didn't get any better. In Chapter 5, what looks like a list of geneology was actually a resounding repetition of death.
Yes, God could have easily punish Adam and Eve with an instant death. After all, it was so easy for him to create again. However, God is showing the gracious side of him by not killing while at the same time, he has a more brilliant plan. He made Adam and Eve pay for the price of their sin. Adam now had to toil the land. Before the fall, Adam worked in the garden but it was not unpleasant. For Eve, she now must suffer the pain during childbearing and learn to submit to her man (Let me address this 'chauvanistic' punishment later). In the midst of the suffering, God hinted of a 'salvation plan' in Gen 3:15. Talking to the serpent, God promise to 'put enmity between (the serpent) and the woman, and between (the serpent's) offspring and hers; He will strike at (the serpent's) head, while (the serpent) strike at his heel." Which is a more deadly strike? On the head or on the heel.
GOD IS NEGLIGENT?
It is so easy to blame God for the mistakes we commit. God is not a negligent God who didn't know that Adam will fall. Indeed when he ask in Gen 3:9 "Where are you?" He already knew what has happened. Rather God is a loving God who took care of everything for Adam and Eve. But this relationship is a 2-way traffic and requires commitment on the part of human beings. God offers his love, and we should respond in the same way -in truth and in faith. We can't expect God to spoonfeed us all the time.
While offering a salvation plan to all in the form of Eve's descendant, Jesus Christ, God restores the relationship with man to pre-fall times. The blood of Jesus paid for all the sins so that now we can communicate with God like how Adam did in the garden of Eden. At the same time, Jesus came to crush the head of the serpent, to frustrate the plan of the evil one. This is God's way of restoring His Kingdom. Therefore, God is omniscient in offering a salvation plan to solve a two-fold problem. God can make good of any situations.
CHAUVANISTIC?
As a woman, i do have problem accepting the seemingly unfair responsibilities. If man and woman are equal, why do i need to submit to another man?
I've come to realise that in the eyes of God, man and woman are both equal. Each person is responsible for what he/she has done. The purpose that woman was created was to be the helper of Adam (who is more more capable, the helper or the one that needs help?). Rather Eve was created to COMPLEMENT Adam. Man and woman have different roles to play. God is not chauvanistic, just that we're made different.
Eve was fooled by the serpent when she ate the fruit. Well, at least she was fooled! Adam ate the fruit with eyes wide opened. So there is not point arguing who sin more. Both had and are both responsible.

Satan knew Eve was the mother of all living. That is umbilical cord to umbilical cord would come Christ.
Christ is the tree of life.
Satan is the serpent and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
That is why God said;
Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

Yes, I still think that the serpent tempted Eve, that is his main purpose to tempt everyone with the same lye that you are like God so you could be lost forever. He still is that old serpent called Satan.

They had free access to the tree of life, it was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that they were forbidden to eat from. If was a test from God, to see weather they would believe Him, or the devil. If they believed God then they would obey Him, if not they would disobey Him. I think we know which they chose to do and besides the serpent did not correct Eve, he lied to her.

Well, we know that the serpent didn't lie to Eve, God did. He said that they would die "in the day" that they ate of it. They did not die that very day--Adam went on to live over 900 years! God did not punish them with instant death, but simply sent them out of the garden, which was hardly a punishment at all; in fact, Adam must have thought he got a pretty sweet deal, since he was no longer consigned to being God's personal gardener.

It wasn't a metaphor. If you believe that she was tempted, or want to believe, then you must read the bible, because that is where it is explained. The bible isn't shades of gray, it is black or white. You just can't pick and choose to suit your lifestyle. The serpent was satan, Eve listened to it. Did the snake talk? I believe so.
If it seems impossible for that to happen, then you have to realize that with God, all things are possible. If God wanted a snake to talk to you, then one would.
