Different interpretations of the Bible. Sometimes different personal views as well.
The latter is more problematic. Some Christians prefer to use part of the Scriptures to fulfill their personal lifestyle.
For instance, I found some Christians viewed homosexuality OK when it is an abomination to the Lord. Why? Offending anyone? Sinning? "God is love" stance?
Catholics use tradition and the idolization of Mary
Lutherans believe in infant baptism.
Methodists are in the method study of Scripture
Episcoalians (at least half) believe that homosexuality is from God
Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe Jesus was God (John 1:1) and they are the last 144,000 mentioned in Scripture
Mormons believe they are the lost tribe of Israel.
Get my drift?
Not all follow the same doctrines or introduce new ones for the benefit of the congregations. How is the Bible so misinterpreted different from so many scholars and people?
Wish I could answer that one. Just the way it is.

Because the Protestants split away from the teachings of the Church about 400 years ago due to Martin Luther.

Added note: There are a lot of totally clueless people giving answers below. The one who said that Catholics worship or idolize Mary has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. And the one who said that there were two churches (???) in the beginning is a flat-out idiot. Those are the raving justifications of a Protestant that doesn't like the fact that his religion was started by a man nearly 1,600 years after Catholicism was started by Jesus leaving his church to Peter here on Earth. As was said on another post, they don't like the fact that the are far closer to being Branch Davidians following David Koresh than they are being true followers of Jesus.

You will find out that there was two churches in the beginning. The Catholic Church and The True Church. In the Mediaeval Period; you couldn't read the Bible; if you got caught there would be death. But at this time the true church had to flee in the wilderness from this persecuting church.
This was the Dark ages. But anyway afterwards; some protestants seen the Catholic Church trangressing on doctrines of the Bible as not following the Bible--so they came out of her; but still kept most or some of her doctrines; then came more and more out of those and so on.
REV.17:5 :"AND UPON HER FOREHEAD WAS A NAME WRITTEN, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH."

REV.13:1 "...AND ALL THE WORLD WONDERED AFTER THE BEAST."

READ (Rev.12:6,14---church in wilderness)
(Rev.17:5 & Rev.13:1,12--Catholic and Protestants)

Now as I mentioned; God only has one religion.
EPHESIANS 4:4,5 "THERE IS ONE BODY, AND ONE SPIRIT, EVEN AS YE ARE CALLED IN ONE HOPE OF YOUR CALLING: ONE LORD, ONE FAITH, ONE BAPTISM."

EPHESIANS 5:27 "THAT HE MIGHT PRESENT IT TO HIMSELF A GLORIOUS CHURCH, NOT HAVING SPOT, OR WRINKLE, OR ANY SUCH THING; BUT THAT IT SHOULD BE HOLY AND WITHOUT BLEMISH."

The true church is mentioned often in the Bible.
ACTS 20:28 "TAKE HEED THEREFORE UNTO YOUSELVES, AND TO ALL THE FLOCK, OVER THE WHICH THE HOLY GHOST HATH MADE YOU OVERSEERS, TO FEED THE CHURCH OF GOD, WHICH HE HATH PURCHASED WITH HIS OWN BLOOD."

If you really want to know the truth; see both of these sites. The name of the church is called "Living Church of God.

How I know this is the true one because it doesn't have no(Rev.17:5) Catholic Teachings like the rest of them. It's different from the rest; it doesn't follow the majority(Matt.7:13). It keeps all of God's Commandments and follows Jesus(Rev.14:12).

The Catholics have a hierarchy, whereas Protestants do not. The Catholics believe the Pope, cardinals, and bishops are holy men. They believe the Pope is the spokesman for God.

Protestants believe that individuals can have a one on one relationship with God, and that contact with God is not directed through a relgious hierarchy.

Can you see why there's a division, now?

Because none of them can agree on which belief is the one, true way. That's one of the reasons why I got away from Christianity. No matter what sect you were in, another "rival" sect told you that you were wrong and going to hell. So ridiculous.

Churches are big on preaching what to do, but churches (all of them) are human institutions and flawed. Churches are often the worst when it comes to practicing what is preached.

So a true prophet is interested in our relationships, and in people. Churches are interested in the business side, the money, the rules, the restrictions. God never intended to start any business.

Different interpretations of the bible, same as Muslims divided into Shia and Sunni..etc, due to different interpretations of The Qur'an and Muhammad's (PBUH) sayings.

The Catholics follow the pope, and not God. The protestants follow God ( or are suppose to ). The way we get to God is through His Son Jesus. This is the only way, there is only one way to God and 6,000,000,000+ ways.

I dunno, but I know what means 'Catholic': it means Universal. meaning Catholicism is the real religion.
(I DON'T AGREE WITH THAT -I'M SUPPOSE TU BE CATHOLIC BUT I DON'T LIKE IT- CATHOLICISM IS THE MIX OF TOO MANY RELIGIONS)
