When you're punched so many times you act dizzy and stupid. It's not a drink. :)

I believe the term "punch drunk " comes from boxing. It happens when a boxer, over an extensive career, receives multiple blows to the head, resulting in a condition of declining mental ability. Perfect example: Muhamed Ali

It's when you get hit in the face or head so much you become slower and slur your words like you're drunk. Boxers get this.

The term comes from BOXING.

When a person sustains a lot of trauma to their head... they get light headed and their thoughts and vision becomes UNCLEAR.

The term has been generalized, however to indicate someone who is acting oddly, due to trauma or some significant event.

I hope this helps.
