In order to understand why Christians have the cross as a symble of their belief. You must understand what the cross stands for.
You have some incorrect information above in your question. Jesus, who was killed on the cross was never stoned. He was threatened to be stoned but died upon a cross.
Chrisitanity isn't a religion, based on Webster's definition of religion. Ours is a relationship with the One True Living God of Heaven and Earth.
We believe that Jesus Christ paid the ulimate price for our sins. He was beaten so that I might be freed from the penalty of sin which is a spiritual death and eternal separation from God.
His death allows access to God by which He declares there is no other way to reach God except through Him. (John14:6).
To understand Christianity you must first read what we believe. Try starting in the Book of John if you have a Holy Bible to read from. Ask God to reveal the truth to you.
Don't assume to understand a belief system that you never studied before.

Kevin Smith's Buddy Christ is a better icon.
However, the cross represents the sacrifice that Jesus made for us, and we are to identify ourselves with him. The Cross is the only identifiable icon that tells of this sacrifice. There are many other icon, though, such as the outline of a fish, which supposibly was drawn by Jesus in the sand prior to tell the mass of people that "He who is without sin cast the first stone."

Christians use the cross as a symbol of Jesus' suffering. Basically it is there to keep the believers in a state of guilt. Christianity is much about death and guilt.

We were created to Praise and Worship our Creator, God the Father. His Son Jesus Christ formed us in His own image and breathed into our nostrils and we became a living soul.
We betrayed God in the garden of Eden when Eve was tempted by the devil and she ate of the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Then she gave the fruit to Adam and he ate also.
Eve had been told by the Devil, in the form of a serpent, that if she ate of the fruit that she would be like god. But this brought sin and death on mankind.
God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son that whosoever would believe on Him should not died but have everlasting life. John 3:16
I Pray that this helps you.

You wouldn't ask this question if you had a personal relationship with the Lord.
Read the Bible so you, too, will know how important the Cross is to every human.

The cross is a reminder of Jesus' sacrifice. According to Christianity, Jesus' death, which happened on the cross, is what saves us from our sins. It is sort of bitter sweet: nobody is happy Jesus died that way, but this event is ultimately for everyone's passage to heaven

Well Christians believe that Jesus endured all the torure to save us from sin and open the Kingdom of God. The cross reminds them this pain, and God's love for us, to help us turn away from sin.

It symbolizes fatal beatings. Anyone who puts a magnet of a cross on their car deserves a fatal beating.

The cross shows how Jesus died on the cross for us so we can go to heaven, it's not about what happened it's about what God and Jesus did for us as or savior
