When i was in my high school years..there were riots erupting in our school. I had finally gotten in with the right crowd and we suddenly decided that we werent going to fight anymore. Even when we were surrounded once and other kids began to harm us we refused to fight. We would simply walk away and go to the school office and ask for help. We all made a pact..that even if we were assaulted we would not hit back but instead go to the police. We were ridiculed as peace hippies, etc. Did we do the right thing ?

You did the absolute right thing! Someone has to draw the line somewhere and say "I'm not going to be violent." Unfortunately, too many people say "I won't be violent any more after I beat them to a pulp for hurting me!"

Now go a step further-- be a peacemaker. try to resolve and defuse potentially explosive situations.

There is nothing wrong with going to the police (that's why we have laws against harming others.) And of course there is nothing wrong with trying to protect yourself by fighting back against a determined enemy who hates you and will not stop hurting you even if you do nothing. It is also right to protect others, especially the weak and helpless. It is right to take weapons away from those who would use them only to harm others. Sometimes it is wisest not to wait until someone is attacked!

You made a very tough choice in a tough situation. But you did the right thing.

Yes. However, bullies love it when the people they chose to beat don't fight back. So, the only way you would have gotten them to stop is to give them a taste of their own medicine. Not like i'm saying that's the only thing you should have done. Going to seek help from people in leadership positions, like your principal and such, was a good idea.

Your were both right and wrong. You are correct to avoid fighting. However there is a limit.

Christ said turn the other cheek (singular, not plural). If they hit you once, don't take offence (having a chip on your shoulder). But if they come back to hit you again, you need to defend yourself.

Christ did not defend himself when he was beaten and killed. However that was because he was becoming our Savior.

I too was always told in high school to walk away. The problem with that is that high school kids will often mistake someone who is non-violent for a coward.I had a guy bug me starting in grade 7 until I lost it one day in grade 11. I laid him out on the ground with one punch in the face. His attitude towards me changed.. all of a sudden he respected me. Walking is the best policy, but sometimes you have to stand up for yourself.

School age fights tend to be pretty senseless. Fighting back tends to produce more senseless fighting. Reading your question, it sounds like you did fight back in a way that was much much smarter than violence. Overall, yes. I think you did the right thing.

Absolutely and like what was said earlier, if more people were like you the world would be a much, much better place. It's easier to react and fight and strike out than it is to stand there.
Way to go. Most people couldn't do what you did.

Yes I think you were right.
I would also suggest to demonstrate some of your strength in a peaceful manner, so it will prove to the others that you are strong enough to fight, but you chose to peaceful, then they might join you..who knows....??

You gave me something to think about. When I was younger I find it quite hard to not to retaliate when somebody tries to hit me but I should have done what you did, however, I know it is really difficult. BUT DEFINITELY YOU WERE DOING THE RIGHT THING.
