A prong collar is a great training aid on large dogs. It gets their attention back on you,. the alpha dog, instantly.
This is not a everyday collar for ANY dog. It should only be used during training walks to break bad behavior (pulling, aggression, etc).

Prong collars are actually better for a strong puller that a chain collar. I have absolutely no use for gentle leaders or harnesses. There have been neck injuries from gentle leaders when dogs will lunge and their neck gets snapped to the side. How do you think it would feel to be walking along and your head gets snapped to the side. IMO not gentle at all.
All dogs are indiviuals and need different equipment and methods. There is no one size fits all and you or your trainer needs to be able to 'read' your dog.

Used correctly the prong collar is one of the most effective training tolls around.
However most epole ar lazy and do not have a clue as to how one is used properly. So they just throw one on and go.
I use one for my more aggressive pullers. I get better results and faster results than with the gentle leader type. Also my goal is to use the prong collar for training and move out of that type of collar not use it forever. Most people who use the gentle leader just use it forever and for me that just does not work.
I wnat to be able to walk the dog in any tyupe of collar that they have one. But I know I have to train first then move to a less aggressive type collar.

I have seen several dog over the years that were on regular choke collars that had crushed tracheas. They fall down on the neck because they must go over the head, which is bigger, and end up near the trachea. They can be very dangerous!! Also the handler had very little control over the dog.
A pinch collar, when PROPERLY fitted, allows more control and is safer for many dogs. Even the Gentle Leader is not for every dog. A pinch collar is very humane when used CORRECTLY!!!
I hate seeing little pitbull puppies being dragged down the street on them!!!! They do not make your puppy look tough!!! They make people like that look like jerks!!!!!!
There would be NO REASON why a puppy under 6 months would need one!!!! If you have that much trouble with a puppy, get help from a trainer!!!!!!!!!!!

Prong collars are like power steering for hard-headed dogs. It is much better to properly tug a dog ONCE on a prong collar and get him to listen to you than to jerk him and choke him a thousand times and accomplish nothing. A prong collar is like any other tool - it's abuse in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they're doing. And prong collars should NEVER be used on aggressive dogs! They can escalate aggression problems and severely injure the dog if you have to restrain it.

The prong collars are for larger dogs that need a firmer hand in controlling them. The collar is not painful to them although it may look that way. The prongs aren't pointed. They are blunt and more easily felt than a standard collar.

People who use these collars should be made to wear them, themselves. These are often used to make the dogs more aggressive, by causing the dog to experience pain.
