It's the proper thing to do in some cases. If you ask someone for the salt, you thank them after you receive it because you can see the action of the request. If you ask a question in writing, you thank them in advance because you have to wait for an answer.

some say it to thank the person for even listening to the request- and some a** like people say it like you are automatically going to honor their request and just give them what they want- but they wanna sound nice about it

to appreciate any help that the person might give after we request it, also it enhances the request so that there will be a bigger chance for the person to give.
