This is tricky. They've always said listen for a dull thump when you wrap on it. My brother who manages a super market says their ripe when the stem end gives a little, same a for a musk melon.

1) search for the most biggest one.
2) Ä°t should have less yellow parts on it.
3) if you knock on it , it should sound hard, not soft.

I had to go food shopping with my dad . he taught me to tap watermellons and if they sound hard they are good. if they dont , dont get it. (like apples)

What you do is you put your ear up to the watermelon and then knock on it. If it sounds hollow it's good.
