Obviously good ol' brushing is necessary, but are there any techniques or food, etc, that I don't know about?

You should check your local pet store. They should have combs that are specially designed to reduce shedding. There are also two types of medicine that you can get. One of these is a type of lotion that contains the minerals and oils that help to reduce shedding and the other is an internal medicine that pretty much does the same thing. You should also check with your vet to see what they might recommend.

Brush and ROLL your pet. Check someplace like petsmart I think they do have food or treats for things like that. Also consider a hairball control food, if your cat is shedding excessively its probably licking more fur off of itself as well. Warm weather makes pets shed more so keep your cat out of the heat too! Some cats you just have to brush and roll every day or 2; especially in the spring-summer time.

There is NOTHING to curtail a cat, or a dog's shedding. It is the natural falling out of hair. Talk to your vet and he will tell you the same thing. You are already doing all you can already by brushing the cast.

food - grocery store and Wal Mart foods are CRAP

in USA I would be feeding nothing less than Nutro Natural Choice (acutally has a guarantee to improve skin and coat)
in Canada I would feed ACANA or NUTRAM

brush them backwards as this loosens up the hair better....
