My favorite was to run on a nature trail. The view made the run very enjoyable. I also loved to run on a beach and race the incoming waves. I have also run cross country races on sand. When none of those are accessible, I run on the street. On the street I have to be sure my shoes cushion my legs properly. If I have a choice between a hard surface or a soft one, I always choose the soft. So if the choice is there I run on grass. Losing weight is a matter of expending more calories than you take in, in its most simple equation. However, the type of calories is extremely important. Salads and vegetables and fruit are better choices than Twinkies, pizza, cokes, cookies, etc. Running is good in that it causes you to drink more water than you are normally accustomed. Walking is the next best but for older individuals is the best option. The main thing about exercise is to make it so fun that you want to keep doing it. So short and sweet.
Exercise and proper nutrition is the key to health, happiness, and wealth -- yeah right, but exercise is the most important for health.

Running on sand at the same speed as running on a track is much more difficult, i.e., requires much more energy (calorie burn). Weight loss effectiveness will be a factor of how hard you're working on either surface.

The beach is a pleasant place to run, so it might be more effective in terms of getting you out to exercise.

Varying your terrain will be best for your body to reduce running stress.

I don't think so,you have to vary the duration of your jogging.Try an hour jogging in the beach for a week or month then in normal roads for a week or month as well. See there would be no difference.
Though you breath fresher air in the beach.

It's much harder and uses more energy since the sand is so soft. So yes.

Stretch your calves well before! It's very easy to pull a muscle since they are stretched much more on sand. Run on the wet sand, not the dry.

actually no, i'm a runner and the only thing that sand is going to do is soften the blow on the knees. but you will work a little harder to get where your going. your body will burn calories at the same rate, depending on what your heart rate is. if your heart rate is 150 on the sand and 150 on the road, your caloric burn will be the same.

No. it is about the same weight loss for the same amount of running time. but running on the sand is not as jarring and impact on your joints and it is easier on your feet. Plus ...when you get hot and sweaty you can get in the surf and cool off.

they say it is because your legs have to work more walking on sand than on a smooth surface. plus so much nicer to hear the ocean than the traffic!
