A glider is a light airplane (made of balsa wood & fabric) but without a thrust providing mechanism. It flies either by tying it to a running vehicle or a winch driven by a diesel engine standing far at the other end at a considerable distance at a very high speed. After reaching a safe height the glider pilot disengages the wire attached to it which comes down slowly due to a parachute attached to it. After this the glider flies on it's own while the pilot manuveres it, circling and taking advantages of winds in order to come down slowly towards the landing site.
