I am not 100% sure if i understand you correctly but try this.

Go into any folder (or goto CONTROL PANEL and open FOLDER OPTIONS(switch to classic view in XP))

On the menu bar select TOOLS and then FOLDER OPTIONS. in the section BROWSE FOLDERS, set the option box to OPEN EACH FOLDER IN THE SAME WINDOWS, then press OK. the settings may vary for other version of windows.

I hope that helps.

If you have multiple windows open at the same time. And want to close one or more of them.
DO THIS>>>

If the window you want to close is on the task bar at the bottom of the screen. Then click it, and it will become the window that is on top of the layer. Once on top you will be able to close it by clicking on the white X on a red background.
Repeat this process until you have either a clear screen ( Your desktop ) or you just have the program that you want open.

Sometimes by clicking on the bar at the top of a particular window ( That's top of window, not necessarily the top of your screen ) you can bring this window to the top of the layer. Then of course you would be able to close it if you wished.
You should also know that with multiple windows/programs open. You are asking your computer to work harder. This can slow it down.
When you have finished with a program. Close it! It will not take a moment to open it again later.

Can you left click on and "drag the window to another part of the screen? Why is it annoying to have layered windows? Are you working with only one screen (modem) or multiple ones? At the bottom of your screen, do you see a long line of minimized windows? You can 'pull up' any, one at a time, if you are working back and forth, from window to window, by double left clicking on the icon ( with label) representing the window you wish to open. I hope this helps.

If you have a Mac, press F9. It will shrink all the windows and you can click on the one you want. Or, you can use Command-Tab, to move between applications.
If you use Windows, use the bottom bar to select the window you want.
