Definition:

North America electronic cash machine: an electronic machine that enables customers to withdraw paper money or carry out other banking transactions on insertion of an encoded plastic card

[Acronym < automated teller machine]

Risk of redundancy:

Relatively new and conceivably puzzling acronyms, for example, ATM, GPS, and PIN, tempt the user to orient the listener or reader with a redundant additional word such as machine, system, or number. However, ATM machine is equivalent to "automated teller machine machine." Whenever it seems likely the acronym alone will not be understood, it may be accompanied by the full form: ATM (automated teller machine) or the full form may be used alone instead.

*** to mouth? actually, an ATM and debit cards are completely different. ATM's have been around a lot longer. debit cards are a relatively newer development. an ATM is a big money dispensing machine. a lot of them also accept deposits for their associated banks. a debit card is similar to a credit card in that you can swipe it to pay for stuff. but instead of using credit, it comes straight out of your account. most debit cards double as ATM cards. Some newer ones though are gift cards that can only be used to pay for stuff. their attractiveness lies in the fact that unlike a gift card that is exclusive to the store you bought it at, these gift debit cards can be used anywhere. some people also have a pet peeve about people saying ATM machine. what this equates to is saying automated teller machine machine
