I want to get a tatoo done as a surprise for my boyfriend. As his mother Thai I thought it would be a nice gesture to get his name done in Thai, however I am struggling to find his name anywhere.
I can't ask his mother.

You will not impress anybody by trying to translate the tattoo to Thai. Leonard is totally foreign to Thai any way. If you want to impress your boyfriend, just put "Leonard" down on your skin which will be hard to come off without significant scar.
I wouldn't do it myself (tattoo).
If you want to impress others as well as his Thai friends or family, you might want to try Thai designs which are varied.
**I left out one important fact earlier.**
His family will not be necessarily impressed in the good way with your tattoo! Girls should not have tattoos in Thai culture.

Leonard is not a Thai name, it's English with French/Latin roots. It means Lion.
If your boyfriend is Thai his "official" name may be something completely different from Leonard.
"Lion" translates to Thai as "Sing dtoh" or "Sing(h)" or "See(h)" The Thai language has it's own alphabet so these are transliterations using the English alphabet. Check the following site for Thai script:-

Tattooing names is a stupid idea, especially boyfriends. If you must, your siblings & children's names is less troublesome in the future.
