Have never lived there but have spent a total of 6 months in Nepal over the last 10 years trekking and handing out in Kathmandu and a week in Tibet. I have climbed and hiked in all the world major mountain ranges, and some of the lesser and can say without a doubt that the Himalayas are hands down the best, for their beauty and the inner beauty of the people that live there. Coincidence I think not.

yes. a year in a small village along the sun kosi river in nepal. kind of the foothills, not exactly the vertical side of everest. the night sky is really something to see. the quiet. the sunrise on everest is as orange as a sunkist orange. the people are terrific. accomadating. and make picking up the language really easy. free time is spent going house to house to visit everyone and they all help by saying and asking the same things in the beginning until your sentence vocab gets bigger. then they start expanding the topics. very easy first month. the food gets scarse pretty fast and you switch from rice to cornmeal within a week. the icecream dreams stop after a while. there isnt a whole lot of sugar up there and I craved it. when spring comes the mosquitos get pretty bad. there are a lot of general things like that. but it aint the catskills or the rockies. for me it was a must do. I would do it again. bring several easy to pack fishing poles.

I am born and brought up in Himalayas. It is the north indian hill state of India "Himachal Pradesh". Right now, I am working in a south indian state, but the peace and adventures of himalayas are hugely missed. Living there is like living in heaven on earth.
Some of the interesting web sites of the region:
