There are two types of sheetfed scanners. One is the small portable that simple sucks in in one side and spits it out the other. The advantage of this, is the scanner is much smaller than a flat bed, and you don't have to worry about the glass. Many people who travel and must do a light amount of scanning use these.
The other type is much larger, and is a flat bed scanner with an ADF (Auto Document Feeder) attached to it. This is for people who need to do a lot of scanning, quickly.
For the average household a regular flat bed is the best choice. However for office work, the ADF can be a better choice.
Small portable sheetfed scanners are relatively cheap, flatbed with ADFs start at about $350. and go up into the thousands of dollars.

swissnick is correct, However, he did forget to mention one BIG difference between a SHEET FED Scanner and a FLAT BED Scanner.
The SHEET FED Scanner can NOT be used to copy pages from say books, magzines, etc or any NON FLAT item. It can ONLY copy sheets.

One with an automatic paper feeder - so you could insert 20 pages at once, and the scanner will go them through without any extra interaction.
Same with huge copiers, actually...
