Jesus certainly did not believe in any trinity, nor his disciples. The trinity doctrine became part of the Christian doctrine through the council of Nicea of 325 CE, where it was adopted, much like the Congress adopts bills without reading them, because the priests were afraid of the Emperor, Constantine, and signed something many of them didn't agree with. But anyway, 300 plus years after Jesus, Jesus was declared to be God, and the Catholics also added Mary.
The doctrine of the trinity is a pagan (polytheistic) doctrine, adopted because Constantine was trying to find a religion to use as the basis for keeping his kingdom unified, and he wanted to take the "gods" of various religions then existing and fuse them together into one.
Incidentally, one of the reasons Muhammed (Muslim religion founder) opposed Christianity (but not Jesus) is that he felt that Christianity had become polytheistic (believed in many gods), while Muhammed felt that God was ONE, and was neither male nor female.

Trinity [Lat.,=threefoldness], fundamental doctrine in Christianity, by which God is considered as existing in three persons. While the doctrine is not explicitly taught in the New Testament, early Christian communities testified to a perception that Jesus was God in the flesh; the idea of the Trinity has been inferred from the Gospel of St. John. The developed doctrine of the Trinity purports that God exists in three coequal and coeternal elements—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (see creed 1). It sees these “persons” as constituted by their mutual relations, yet does not mean that God in his essence is Father, or a male deity. Jesus spoke of a relation of mutual giving and love with the Father, which believers could also enjoy through the Spirit. The Trinity is commemorated liturgically in the Western Church on Trinity Sunday. For systems denying the Trinity, see Unitarianism.

1 John 5:7,8 is the only "proof" of the trinity, however this was added to the Bible centuries after Jesus came and left. This excerpt from the Bible is called the Comma Johanneum, and there's been lotsa debate over it. Basically, it's an addition to the Bible, so it's not true word of God, so don't believe it.
There is no trinity, pure and simple.

Well first off..God's ways are NOT our ways..His ways are so much higher than our own...After all He created & sustains the universe. to explain that to the simplistic human mind would be simlilar to explaining trig. to a 1st grader. As for the trinity..the most simple answer would be..Father (YHWH/Jehovah/Yahweh) Jesus & Holy Ghost are MORE than just titles. They each are distinct & different persons. Think of it like a light bulb, there is the glass part, the filiment(which creates the light) and the power. Each one of those elements is different & distinct, & yet all 3 are required to make a light bulb. The same thing can be applied to a cube, or the universe itself: space, time, & matter. Each individual element is required to make the one Whole.
So...there is Yahweh (God the Father) Jesus Christ (God the Son) and the Holy Spirit (God the Holy Spirit) All 3 different & distinct yet only ONE GOD.

In order to "work out" the trinity, I take them to Gold's Gym.
While the Father is doing muscle reps, I have the Son on the treadmill. Meanwhile the Holy Spirit is in step aerobics class. They say I'm a hard personal trainer, but you should see the results the three of them are getting. It's a miracle!

This is one of the crucial questions of christianity- is the trinity a human concept or a divine reality?
The whole issue centres around the idea of who the resurrected jesus was. Jesus gave his life as a sacrifice for our sin, this was to release humanity from the sin of Adam and restore us to our full humanity. In order to do this God had to become man, otherwise it would not have made sense. So, simply, God becomes man in the person of jesus who is fully both God and man, the second person of the trinity. Following the resurrection Jesus returns physically to heaven, (that's a difficult one), but in order to nourish the church and ensure that it thrives, the gift of the holy spirit is bestowed on his followers (Acts), and so the future progress of the church as God's continuing physical presence on earth is assured. The Holy spirit is still with us, keeping that link between man and God alive.
Apart from the ascension, I have no problem with this concept, and believe it to be the prime paradox among the many paradoxes of christian belief.
It makes perfect sense to me, but understand why others may doubt it.
This is not the definitive answer, but the answer of a simple christian dealing with the complexities of everyday life.
Thank you for your important question.

I don't regard the trinity as a mystery. God is not a man. God, the Father is Thee Holy Spirit in His eternal heavenly body. Man is a spirit in a flesh body. Christ was God's spirit in a flesh body. The Holy Spirit is God's spirit. Is that still beyond comprehension?

Trinitarian doctrine was invented in 325 CE (ad) and was forced on people under penalty of death.
"The original Nicene Creed was first adopted in 325 at the First Council of Nicaea, which was the Ecumenical Council. At that time, the text ended after the words "We believe in the Holy Spirit." "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicene_Creed
If you read the above link, you should discover that the people who invented the idea did not agree with each other, and there was disagreement over it's validity.
In other words, it is not "biblical," it is an idea invented by Roman Emperor Constantine's council and forced on people at the point of a sword.
