The worlds most commonly spoken language (natively) is Madarin (a dialect in Chineese). Over 860 million people currently speak Mandarin. This list is as of 1998 and is from Dr. Bernard Comrie’s article for the Encarta Encyclopedia:
1. Mandarin Chinese (836 million)
2. Hindi (333 million)
3. Spanish (332 million)
4. English (322 million)

If you mean spoken as a native language, the answer is Mandarin Chinese or Putonghua. If you mean spoken as first, second, or third langauge, the answer is English.
