The Republic of Angola's officially-recognised national languages are Portuguese, Koongo, Mbundu, Chokwe, Mbunda and Kwanyama, also known as Oxikuanyama. Angola was formerly a Portuguese colony, but as an African nation, there are many African languages spoken within the country other than those officially sanctioned by government. Interestingly, only 30% of Angolans are considered literate. The popular campfire song 'Kumbyah' is Angolan in origin.
