Vista... Because its great...

See, Vista is not going to be officially released until 2007 sometime. But we "can use the beta", download or even buy the DVD for it, and... enjoy.
On the other end, in the meantime producers will be driven to add that special "Vista ready" logo, otherwise nobody will buy an "obsolete" XP personal computer.

To answer your question, I honestly don't know; and I fear nobody truly knows the difference between something MS is still debugging (XP, note the flooding of patches released just this month) and something that MS decided - in the smartest way - to have debugged by the users!

In the end, is always a matter of money, time and personal needs. The real ones.

For now Windows XP because Vista is requiring a bunch of VRAM. I'm not gonna stay at Vista 5 years after they release it.

Not a fair question since Vista is still in beta testing and the final version hasnt been released yet.

Windows Vista requires much more physical memory (for graphics support); if you have XP installed and all patches are up-to-date, working firewall and anti-virus, stay with XP.

don't know since vista has not been released yet, there is only the beta version, not the finished product. It is still in the testing phase

It depends what you want to do. If it's only word processing, windows 98 would be better than windows xp (without extra bloat).

Generally, newer = better.

Windows is an all around bad operating system. Go with Apple.
