Because their "free" credit report is a scam. It was in the newspaper a few months back that they offer a "Free" credit report, but need your credit card number? They want to send you more reports over time, saying that the reports change over time and you NEED their service to keep track of personal idenity theft issues, anything to get you to give your credit care info.
Stay away. I'd say, apply for a Sears or some such store, credit card, when they turn you down you can request a copy of the credit report from their credit agency and IT IS FREE! So thee are scammers of all sorts out there. You had a VERY good question and more people should be as smart as you and question their need for your info. If it is legit they could get your info. from your report right? Hum, somethig to think about huh? They have to have you OFFER UP THE INFORMATION in order for them to legitimatly charge you for their services. Same goes for the consumer protection credit card companies offer. You don't need it because if you read the small print in their agreement when you get the card, it states if lost or stolen, you are not held responsible if the loss or theft is reported in a timely manner. Its a scam, sorry, but good for you to ask!

You don't need a credit card to access the free credit report if you go to the correct website. Once a year, you can get a free report from each of the three major credit report companies.

They will give you a free credit report when you sign up. If you stay with them they will charge you a fee for a credit monitoring service and they will charge you a fee for any additional credit reports.
They need your credit card number to charge the fees too.
It is not a ripoff, you can still get a free report and decline the other offers without getting charged any fees. Just make sure you read any agreements you make with them.

It is a scam. In order to get tthe free credit report, you have to singe up for three months of their credit monitoring service. I think it's like $34.95 or something. It is a RIP-OFF!!.

That is because the 'free' isnt really free .. they are in it for the money (and parting You from yours) and not for your good.
