We are starting the same process. The fist step is to talk to an adoption or Family Law attorney, many offer free initial consultations. Each state has different laws, so there is no 'one way' to proceed. We live in Colorado and will have to show proof that the biological parent has receieved counseling before they will let her terminate her rights. Colorado also requires we get a home study to prove that I am a fit parent to adopt my step-son. Even though my child has not seen his bio mom in 6 years, talked to her in three years, and only knows me as mom (I have been raising him full time since he was 3) we still have to jump through all sorts of hoops. We were told it could have 6-12 months and cost around $2500.

Good luck!

You need to petition your local family court. The judge will probably require some sort of affidavit from the birth father, but without contest, the Court should decree and order a new birth certificate right away.

don't be scared. there are a number of things which you're able to do to chop back the undesirable outcomes of adoption. in the beginning make the adoption as open as available. this implies staying in touch with the beginning family contributors to a minimum of substitute photos and letters and scientific history. Secondly, tell the youngster they are observed as quickly as you cradle them. they'll understand ultimately. The extra open approximately it the extra primary the youngster will experience. Thirdly, communicate approximately their concern actually and openly. do no longer watch for them to ask for advice with the aid of fact often they are going to be scared to. you may decide to talk approximately extra serious or doubtlessly frightening information till later yet conversing approximately their concern ordinarily will lead them to experience soft approximately asking questions and conversing to you approximately any subjects they could have. finally, your baby could (or will possibly no longer) have subjects with adoption or being fostered. they could have separation subjects, attachment problems, stress and have confidence subjects, you ought to be arranged to settle for that adoption is a loss to the youngster and supply your ears. in the event that they arrive to you disenchanted, pay attention to them, supply them a hug and do the main suitable you could to appreciate what they are asserting with out turning out to be protective. in case you come across they do no longer seem to be dealing with primary lives and/or are no longer forming helpful relationships then you truly could locate counsilling or scientific care with a individual experienced in separation subjects a help. sturdy success, you in user-friendly terms ought to do the excellent issues and you'd be nice. if my adoptive mothers and fathers did each and all of the above i could be lots happier with my concern.
