I just bought a new home cinema receiver and have connected my DVD player using the analogue Audio L + R jacks. Will my receiver automatically decode 5.1 sound or do I need the digital cable to do this?

Only a digital cable can get you 5.1 sound. If you have the option, I'd use an optical cable over a coaxial. The reason being, there is no difference in quality between the cheapest and the most expensive one. Thus you can save a few bucks. The same is not true with the coaxial.

those living house theater in a container at the instant are not versatile for including something to them or for upgrading. the only way so you might get sound throughout the device is that if it has an optical audio enter. You connect an optical audio cable from the television to the living house theater device. Leaving each thing else linked the type you have it. remember that no longer all television courses have encompass sound, basically those television software with the Dolby digital emblem might have encompass sound. wish this might help you out.

have a look at the back of the receiver.
you should find a section for audio in.
it will show front L and R, and rear L and R, and center and sub.
using cable connect all those to the corresponding outputs in back of the player.
you will need to go through the menu in both the player and the receiver to set up 5.1 sound, or you will only hear stereo.

L and R is just stereo.

If you want 5.1 you have to use a Fiber optic, Digital coax or a 6 channel output (old but still out there).

Make sure that your receiver and your dvd player are set to output and receive a 5.1 signal. (It's in the manuals)

You DO need a optical cable. the analog L/R cables can not carry a digital sound. It is only sending a stereo sound.
those cadle will work for Dolby Pro Logic.... but not 5.1

Red/White Rca Lead will only give you a Stereo Downmix.. (not 5'1 Sound..) Optical is the best bet being a Digital connection.. all the others Are Electrical connections

Spend the money on the cable or you will only have a stereo signal being processed in dolby pro logic, not true 5.1.

If you used the Optical it will give you better surround splitting.
it works great with the xbox360 & DVD players.
