I take "anti-depressants" but they don't work. My parents say they do, but they don't know how I feel. I'm not suicidal. I never have been. I would just like some help.

A natural way to help depression is exercise it is proven that exercise daily releases a natural chemical in the brain. Also maybe if you get involves in some activities with others your age.

Anti-depressants are worthless. You can get the same effect from diet and exercise which is better for you anyways. Also anti-depressants have a high relapse rate, so once you go off of them you're problem could just come right back. Trying going for a walk or jogging for at least twenty minutes a day. Switch your diet to all natural foods. All the additives in processed foods aren't good for your body and slow you down. Also this may sound silly, but go tanning. There have seen several studies that show exposure to light for small periods of time each day have the same effects as anti-depressants. Your body is hitting a wall and that's why you're feeling depressed. You need to get active and moving and it will have a HUGE effect on your mood.

I "do" take antidepressants and they have saved my life. Depression is an illness, just like diabetes or cancer. It's not just about "learning how to cope" and finding things that make you happy. Because if you are seriously depressed NOTHING makes you happy. There is no WILL to try. Just because they do not work for some people should not be justification for others not to try it. It takes time, it may take trying different drugs and dosages. It is no fast, easy fix. And therapy is very, very important because you need support and learn how to cope the best way possible. And yes, there could be negative patterns that affect your life you aren't even aware of that can be changed. I suggest calling a suicide hotline on the front page of your phonebook. You need expert help right now. But people are always here for support. Good luck.

I doubt very much whether any one having depression would attempt a reply as they may seldom communicate and open sites like YA. So only people like us would only respond.
I find a big silver lining in your case in that you have analysed your problem, know that it can be overcome, and you want to overcome.Armed with all these you problem is 90%solved.

Go through various websites. Read medical journals.
I would rather say that you must come out of your present routine and get into a complete change over. The entire environment and atmosphere has to be changed. But how to do it.
First thing is eat lot of vegetables, greens.
Dont allow constipation to develop Have a regular bowel movements
Drink lot of water , fresh lime juice.
Do jogging, brisk walking, running, treadmill exercise.
Tire yourself till you profusely sweat.
Go out to any park. Sir somewhere calmly draw deep breadth and then leave it out slowly. Do it 20times atleast daily morning and evening
Swimming, Tennis, Volley Ball etc are good
Mix with people. Talk if you can and want or otherwise hear their talks.
Play with children, dogs etc
Go to Church.
Engage yourself in social service, volunteering .
Develop some hobby, painting, drawing sketching etc.
Listen to music and dance
NEVER BE ALONE NEVER BROOD OVER THINGS
THINK POSITIVE AVOID LOOSE TALKS DONT LAMENT
DONT CRITICISE ANY BODY
IF YOU DONT LIKE SOME COMPANY MOVE AWAY.

To MariaViet: IMHO your advice is very dangerous! One cannot "cure yourself" of depression. To suggest that the patient is able to stop the hurt but just isn't appliying himself out of what....? Laziness? Or he's secretly enjoying the mental pain and paralysis?

To WSUougal: IMHO, DITTO. Light therapy is effective only to the extent that ones condition is attributable to light deprivation. There are as many causes for depression as there are drs. with opinions (and assholes). One common cause is chemical imbalance in the brain. The person affected is capable of curing depression just as a car can change its own tire by thinking happy thoughts of pink bubble gum and gently rolling meadows. ie, the cause is mechanical in nature.

Maria, WSU, mischief, suziq, and sacredserenity were all dancing in the right direction - sorta. All those activities do affect chemical activity of the brain in a positive fashion.

To Brandon: I want you to get better - you will need help. Reread the advice from cassie and peppercorn. They are telling it like it is. Best of luck and love.

Talk to your therapist. It took me 5 tries to get the right meds and dosage. It usually takes a month for you to see results, but during this time, take careful notes about how you feel. If you don't have a therapist and you just have a General Practitioner, these notes help to see if it is working.

Your parents are probably basing this off your behavior changes and you may just need a stronger dose of what you have. Talk to the doctor and see what they think.

Have you ever wondered about the reason of our existence? Have you ever wondered why we die, and where we go after death? What will happen to us in the end? Have you ever asked yourself why God made the earth and all that is in it under man’s dominion? Why were the night and the day, and the sun and the moon created? What are we supposed to do during our lifetime? Were we created just to eat, drink, and enjoy ourselves before we die? As one poet put it:
“I do not know whence I have come.
I saw my feet walking on the road.
As they please I go and stop.
What am I doing here?
How did the road find me?
I do not know! I do not know! I do not know! ”

God has emphasized in many verses of the Qur’an that He did not create us without purpose. He said: “What! Do you think that I created you simply in jest? And that you would not be returned to Me?” (23:115) He also said: “What! Does man think that he will be left to roam at his will?” (75:36) In addition, He said: “Do people think that they will be left to say: “We believe,” and they will not be held accountable?” (29:2)
Indeed, God Has created human beings for a purpose and with a purpose: TO WORSHIP HIM ALONE (Monotheism). He said: “I have not created the Jinn and humankind except only to worship Me. I don't require provision or feeding from them. Surely Allah is the All-provider, the Possessor of all strength, the Firm.” (51:56-58) In fact, all prophets told their people to worship God alone (Monotheism) and shun worshipping His creation (Paganism). God said: “I assuredly sent among every people a messenger with the command: Worship Allah and avoid worshipping false gods.” (16:36)
Prophet Abraham, for example, believed in One God, who had no partner. Anyone who holds a different understanding of God than this has contradicted the religion of Abraham and follows falsehood. God says in the Qur’an: “Those who reject the religion of Abraham make fools of themselves.” (2:130)
Prophet Jesus was reported in the Gospels to have said: “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve Him only’.” (Luke 4:8)
Prophet Jacob also said (in the Qur'an) to his people: “Indeed, those which you worship besides Allah are only names that you and your forefathers have established, for which Allah has sent down no authority. The command belongs only to Allah. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the right religion, but most people do not understand.” (12:40)

Real happiness and peace can be ONLY found in submitting to the commands of the Creator and the Sustainer of this world. God has said in the Qur’an: (Truly, in remembering God do hearts find rest.)
(Qur’an, 13:28)

On the other hand, the one who turns away from the Qur’an will have a life of hardship in this world. God has said:
(But whoever turns away from the Qur’an, he will have a hard life, and We will raise him up blind on the Day of Judgment.) (Qur’an, 20:124)
This may explain why some people commit suicide while they enjoy the material comfort money can buy. For example, look at Cat Stevens (now Yusuf Islam), formerly a famous pop singer who used to earn sometimes more than $150,000 a night. After he converted to Islam, he found true happiness and peace, which he had not found in material success.
