Because when the abdominal muscles are properly tones they have a pattern of three bumps with a division in the center creating a "six-pack"

The "six-pack" term comes from the number of lumps present and counted in a well-toned and fairly fat-free set of abs, more specifically the Abdominus Recti muscles up front.

But--Extra Credit for ya!--there are actually *eight* muscles to account for there, it is just that the bottom pair seldom get developed enough in people of medium or small size to get noticed, especially since the last two are on the bottom of the abs where they meet the pelvic crease.

Plus it depends a lot on body shape too, folks with flat to concave--inward curving--abs, might not ever see their bottom pair of abdominus recti. But bigger folks, especially ones with convex torso shapes--think football players, especially linebackers, can and will get the "eight-pack" instead of the six-pack as they get lean and develop all of their torso. The only real difference is that in those bigger fellows, the bottom is big enough to be noticed. :)

The "six pack" is actually the two rectus abdominus muscles (left and right side) with tendinous intersections (linea semilunaris) running at the borders of each "pack" in the column.

As a previous respoder has mentioned there are in fact more than six "packs".

Almost everyone has a eight pack, only most people have too much fat so its impossible to see it.
